Wearable Blankets for Tall People: Where the Hem Lands, by Height

Most wearable blankets stop at the thigh on a six-footer. Enfold's 56 inches reaches the ankle at about 6'0" and the lower shin at 6'6"; above 6'3", a height-sized cape reaches lower.

Tall people get a raw deal from wearable blankets. A "long" blanket hoodie cut for an average adult stops at mid-thigh on someone over six foot, and a "one size" listing rarely says whose size it means. Here is how to check any of them yourself, then the honest numbers for ours.

How to work out where any wearable blanket lands on you

  1. Find the shoulder-to-hem length on the listing. Ignore measurements taken from the top of the hood.
  2. Your shoulder sits at roughly 82% of your height. Multiply your height in inches by 0.82.
  3. Subtract the garment length from that. The answer is roughly how far above the floor the hem sits when you stand. Negative means it reaches the floor.

Example: at 6'2" (74 inches) your shoulder is about 61 inches up. A 40-inch blanket hoodie leaves the hem about 21 inches off the floor: just above the knee.

Enfold, by height

Enfold is 56 inches (142 cm) from shoulder to hem. Estimated hem position standing, using the method above; real bodies vary by an inch or two either way.

Height Hem, standing
5'0" On the floor, about 7 inches extra; gather the front to walk
5'3" On the floor, about 4 inches extra
5'6" Touching the floor
5'9" Brushing the floor
6'0" At the ankle
6'3" Just above the ankle bone
6'6" Lower shin
6'9" Mid-shin

Sitting, it covers the feet at every height on this list, because the fabric folds around you. Width is not the issue for tall or broad people: it is 66 inches across at its widest and hangs from the shoulders rather than fitting the body.

If you are over 6'3"

It still covers your legs well sitting, which is where most people use it. Standing, it lands on the shin, not the ankle. If full standing length matters to you, look for a brand that sells height-specific tall sizes; we compare one in our Eden Hoodie comparison. We would rather tell you that than have you send it back.

Other things tall people should check

  • Hood depth. A shallow hood pulls the whole garment up at the front when you raise it.
  • Sleeve length, if it has sleeves. Oversized sleeves are often still short on long arms. Sleeveless designs avoid the problem.
  • Free returns. Length is the thing most likely to be wrong, so do not buy where the return costs you.

Common questions

What is the best wearable blanket for tall men?

One with at least 54 to 58 inches from shoulder to hem and a wide cut. At 6'0" to 6'3", a 56-inch length reaches the ankle. Above that, look for height-specific sizes.

Will a one-size wearable blanket fit someone 6'4"?

Width, yes, if it is cut oversized. Length depends on the shoulder-to-hem measurement: multiply your height in inches by 0.82 and subtract the garment length to see how far off the floor it sits.

Is a wearable blanket too long for short people?

A floor-length one will pool on the floor when someone under about 5'6" stands. Most people like that when sitting; when walking, gather the front like a long dressing gown, and take care on stairs.
