Blanket Hoodie vs Wearable Blanket vs Blanket Cape: Which Is Warmest?

Three shapes of wearable blanket, where each loses heat, and which suits how you actually sit.

Three different garments get sold under the same handful of names. A blanket hoodie, a wearable blanket and a blanket cape all promise to keep you warm, and they do it in different ways. The difference is not the fabric, which is usually some kind of polyester fleece in all three. It is where the shape lets warm air escape.

The three shapes

1. The blanket hoodie

An oversized hoodie in blanket fabric, with sleeves and usually a front pocket, ending somewhere between mid-thigh and the knee. The Oodie and The Comfy are the well-known examples. It is a piece of clothing first.

Where it leaks heat: the hem. Everything below the knee is uncovered, and every time you lift your arms the body of the hoodie lifts with them and pulls cold air in from below.

2. The sleeved blanket (the Snuggie shape)

A flat blanket with two sleeves sewn in, worn back to front so the open side is behind you. It covers the legs well when you are sitting and almost nothing when you stand up.

Where it leaks heat: the back, which is open by design, and anywhere it slides off. It is a sofa object; it does not come with you to the kettle.

3. The hooded blanket cape

Two long panels joined at the shoulders, open down both sides, pulled on over the head, with a deep hood. No sleeves: your arms come out through the sides when you need them and go back in when you do not. The front is one continuous piece. It reaches the ankle and folds around you when you sit.

Where it leaks heat: the open sides, a little, when your arms are out. With your arms in, it is a closed tent from the hood to the floor.

Which is warmest?

For sitting still, which is when most people get cold, the cape is the warmest of the three, for a simple reason: it covers the most skin with the fewest gaps. The body loses heat roughly in proportion to exposed area, and the legs and feet are a large share of that area. A knee-length hoodie leaves them out entirely.

For moving around the house, the blanket hoodie and the cape are close. The hoodie is easier on stairs; the cape is warmer once you stop.

For doing things with your hands, the cape wins if you use your hands in bursts (typing, a controller, a book) because the arms come in and out freely. The hoodie wins if your hands are out the whole time, because sleeves keep the forearms covered.

The sleeved blanket is warmest only when you are sitting perfectly still in one chair. It is also the cheapest.

Where Enfold sits

Enfold is a hooded blanket cape: 56 inches from shoulder to hem, open at both sides, one continuous front, plush faux fur inside and a matte cotton-blend fleece outside. A little weight is sewn through the hood and shoulders so it sits still instead of sliding when you move. We built it for the desk-and-sofa hours, which is where the cape shape is strongest.

If you are choosing between specific brands, our Oodie alternatives guide covers the hoodie side and this one covers capes in more detail.

Common questions

What is the difference between a blanket hoodie and a wearable blanket?

A blanket hoodie has sleeves and a hem around the knee, like clothing. "Wearable blanket" is a looser term that covers sleeved blankets and sleeveless capes, which are usually longer and open at the sides.

Is a Snuggie a wearable blanket?

Yes. It is a blanket with sleeves, worn back to front with the open side behind you. It works well sitting still and poorly once you stand up.

Which wearable blanket is warmest?

For sitting, a long hooded cape that reaches the ankle, because it covers the legs and feet and has no open back. For walking around, a sleeved blanket hoodie is close and easier to move in.

Can you walk around in a blanket cape?

Yes. It hangs from the shoulders like a long coat. Lift the front slightly on stairs, the way you would with a long dressing gown.
