Weighted Blanket Hoodies: What They Are and What to Check Before You Buy

Three different things get sold as a weighted blanket hoodie. What each one is, how heavy it should be, and what to check before you buy.

Last updated: 28 September 2026.

Search for a weighted blanket hoodie and you get three different products under one name. Some are sweatshirts with weighted panels sewn in. Some are oversized blanket hoodies with no weight at all. And some, like the one we make, are floor-length wearable blankets with the weight in the hood and shoulders. They solve different problems, and the listing photos rarely tell you which one you are looking at.

This guide sorts them out, explains how heavy a garment you wear can sensibly be, and lists what to check before you buy.

What counts as a weighted blanket hoodie?

The term covers three formats:

  • Weighted hoodies. A fitted or relaxed sweatshirt with weight added through pockets, panels or the shoulders. Usually sold for sensory comfort. You wear it like normal clothing.
  • Blanket hoodies. An oversized fleece hoodie, often sherpa-lined, cut roomy enough to pull your knees inside. Warm, but not weighted, despite the name.
  • Wearable weighted blankets. A blanket cut to be worn: a hood, a long body, and a few pounds of weight placed where it rests on you. Floor-length versions cover you standing and pool around you sitting.

If the product page does not state a weight in pounds or kilograms, assume it is not weighted.

How the three compare

Weighted hoodie Blanket hoodie Wearable weighted blanket
Weight A few pounds in panels or pockets None A few pounds at hood and shoulders
Length Hip Thigh to knee Ankle to floor
Arms Sleeves Sleeves Sleeves, or open sides
Warmth Like a sweatshirt High High, and it covers your legs
Best for Wearing all day Warmth on the sofa Cold evenings and the hours before bed

How heavy should a weighted blanket hoodie be?

Lighter than a weighted blanket. The rule of thumb most blanket makers use is around 10% of body weight, which lands at 12 to 20 pounds for most adults. That works on a bed, where the weight spreads flat and you are lying still. On a garment it would hang from your neck and shoulders every time you stood up.

Wearable versions sit between about 3 and 6 pounds. Where the weight goes matters as much as how much there is. Weight spread through the hood and shoulders reads as a hand resting on you. The same weight in pockets at the hem pulls the garment down and swings when you walk.

Enfold carries four pounds, placed through the hood and shoulders for that reason: light enough to wear for an evening, heavy enough that you notice it settle. It is not a therapeutic weighted blanket, and we do not sell it as one. Here is what the research on weight and anxiety actually shows.

What is inside: glass beads, plastic pellets, or nothing

Most weighted textiles use one of two fills. Glass micro-beads are small, dense and quiet, so they add weight without much bulk. Plastic poly pellets are larger and cheaper, need more volume for the same weight, and can rustle when you move. Either way the fill should sit in sewn channels or pockets so it cannot slide to one end. Blanket hoodies without a stated weight usually have no fill at all, only thick fleece or sherpa.

What to check before you buy

  1. A stated weight. In pounds or kilograms, on the product page. A “weighted feel” is not a weight.
  2. Where the weight sits. Hood and shoulders, not hem pockets.
  3. What the fill is, and whether it is enclosed. Glass beads in sewn channels stay put and stay quiet. Loose pellets shift, clump and rustle.
  4. Length against your height. A floor-length piece pools on shorter people and stops at the ankle on taller ones. Use a size guide that goes by height; ours shows how it falls at yours.
  5. Sleeves or open sides. Sleeves keep heat in your arms. Open sides let your arms out for a mug or a laptop without lifting the whole thing.
  6. How it washes. Weighted pieces are heavy when wet. Check it can go in a home machine; our washing guide covers the rest.
  7. Heat. Fleece and faux fur are warm. If you run hot, read why weighted blankets overheat before you choose.

Who a weighted blanket hoodie suits, and who it does not

It suits people who are cold at home in the evening, who get up and down from the sofa, and who like the settled feeling of a weighted blanket but cannot wear one to the kitchen. It is a poor fit if you run hot, if you want something to sleep under all night, or if you need a specific therapeutic weight. For that, a weighted blanket on the bed does the job better.

Weighted products are not suitable for babies or young children. If you are buying for sensory needs, an occupational therapist can advise on the right weight.

Frequently asked questions

Is a weighted blanket hoodie the same as a weighted hoodie?

Not quite. A weighted hoodie is usually a sweatshirt with weight added. A weighted blanket hoodie is usually a blanket cut to be worn: longer, looser, with the weight in the hood and shoulders.

Can you sleep in a weighted blanket hoodie?

You can doze in one, but most are designed for the hours before bed. A floor-length piece with a hood gets warm under a duvet. For weight all night, a weighted blanket on the bed is the better tool.

Are weighted blanket hoodies safe?

For most adults, a few pounds across the shoulders is a comfortable weight. If you have a condition affecting circulation, breathing, or your neck and shoulders, check with your doctor first. They are not for babies or young children.

Do weighted blanket hoodies help with anxiety?

Some people find weight calming, but the research on weighted blankets is mixed, and it studied far heavier weights than any garment carries. We go through it in does weight help anxiety. A wearable piece is better thought of as warmth and comfort than as treatment.

How do you wash a weighted blanket hoodie?

Follow the care label. Most wearable versions with enclosed glass beads can go in a home machine on a cold, gentle cycle and dry flat. The full method is in how to wash a weighted blanket.

Where Enfold fits

Enfold is the third kind: a floor-length wearable blanket with a deep hood, open sides and no front opening, so there is nothing to hold shut. Four pounds of glass micro-beads are channel-sewn through the hood and shoulders. Matte fleece outside, deep faux fur inside. One size, nine colours.
