Oodie Dupes: What the Cheaper Ones Change, and What to Check

A cheap Oodie dupe is fine if it publishes a shoulder-to-hem length near 100 cm, uses heavy fleece and has an easy return. The photos will not tell you; these five checks will.

The Oodie Original is $89 in the US. Department stores, supermarkets and marketplaces sell sleeved blanket hoodies that look the same in a photo for a fraction of that: people search for the Kmart one in Australia and New Zealand, and for supermarket and Amazon versions in the UK, US and Canada. Some are good. The photos will not tell you which. These are the five things that actually differ, and how to check each before you pay.

1. Length

The Oodie publishes its front length: 85 cm for S/M and 100 cm for the oversized size, measured from the shoulder. Most dupes do not, and the shorter ones stop at mid-thigh. If a listing does not give a shoulder-to-hem length, ask, or assume it is short. To see where any length lands on you: multiply your height in inches by 0.82 and subtract the garment's length. The answer is roughly how far off the floor the hem sits.

2. Fabric weight

Blanket fabric is sold by weight, in grams per square metre (gsm). Heavier fleece is warmer, drapes better and pills more slowly. Cheap versions save money here first, and it shows after a few washes. If a listing gives a gsm, compare it; if it does not, the product weight in the shipping details is a rough proxy. A light one feels thin.

3. The lining

Most use sherpa, the looped fleece that imitates a sheep's fleece. Low-grade sherpa flattens into hard little clumps after a winter of washing. Look at reviews with photos taken a few months after purchase, not on the day it arrived.

4. Seams and cuffs

Blanket hoodies are heavy, and the weight hangs from the shoulder seams and pulls on the cuffs. Cheaper ones fail at the cuff elastic and the hood seam first. Reviews mentioning "seam" or "cuff" are the ones to read.

5. Returns

A bulky garment is expensive to post back. A low price with a paid return can end up costing more than a dearer one with a free return if the first does not suit. In-store dupes win here: you can see it and take it back at the counter.

When a dupe is the wrong idea

Some people looking for an Oodie dupe do not want a cheaper Oodie. They want something the Oodie does not do:

  • To reach the floor. No sleeved blanket hoodie does on an average adult, dupe or not. Floor-length versions drop the sleeves and open the sides. Our floor-length guide explains why.
  • Hands free. If big cuffed sleeves get in the way of typing or gaming, a sleeveless hooded cape fixes that. See blanket hoodies for gaming.
  • Something that looks less like bedding. A matte, cotton-blend outer reads as clothing.

Enfold is ours and it is not a dupe: it is that other shape, a hooded cape 56 inches from shoulder to hem, plush faux fur inside, 480 gsm matte fleece outside, one adult size worn from about 5'0" to 6'3". It costs about what an Oodie does, ships free with tracking to the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and most of Europe, and returns are free. If what you want is a cheap sleeved hoodie, buy a good dupe instead, using the checks above.

Common questions

Is the Kmart hoodie blanket as good as the Oodie?

We have not tested it, so we will not say. Check it against the five points above: length from the shoulder, fabric weight, lining, seams and returns. Buying in store makes the return easy, which removes most of the risk.

What is the best Oodie dupe?

The one that publishes a shoulder-to-hem length close to the Oodie's 100 cm, uses heavier fleece, and has photo reviews from months after purchase that show the lining holding up. Price alone tells you little.

Why is the Oodie so expensive?

We cannot see their costs. Across this category, brand, licensed prints and fabric weight are what move the price: a heavy double-layer fleece garment of that size uses a lot of material, and cheaper versions usually save on fabric weight first.

Is there a longer Oodie dupe?

Some sleeved dupes are cut a little longer, but the shape still stops around the knee. For real floor length, look at sleeveless hooded capes, which are open at the sides and pull on over the head.
