A Weighted Blanket You Can Walk In

The short answer is yes, but it is not a weighted blanket. It is a weighted garment, and the difference is the whole point. A flat weighted blanket slides off the moment you stand, and holding it in place takes at least one hand. A wearable one is cut so it stays put and leaves your arms free.

Why a normal weighted blanket cannot do this

A flat blanket relies on gravity and a mattress. Stand up and the weight that was resting evenly across you becomes weight hanging off your shoulders with nothing holding it there. Within a few steps it is on the floor. That is not a design flaw, it is what a blanket is.

What a wearable weighted layer actually is

A hooded garment, usually cut as a cape or open robe, with the weight sewn into fixed channels across the hood and upper back rather than left loose in a shell. Open sides so your arms still work. Long enough to cover you while seated. The weight is measured in a few pounds rather than fifteen, because your shoulders carry it instead of a bed.

The tradeoff, stated plainly

  Flat weighted blanket Weighted wearable
Typical weight 10 to 25 lb 3 to 6 lb
Stays on standing No Yes
Hands free No Yes, with open sides
Covers the hour before bed No Yes
Matches the studied dose Yes No
Best for Lying still in bed Cold rooms, sofa, 3am

How to choose one

  1. Check the weight is sewn into channels, not loose in a shell. Loose fill migrates to the hem within about a week.
  2. Check the sides are open. A pullover shape traps your arms and is useless at a desk.
  3. Check the outer fabric breathes. Overheating is a fabric problem far more often than a weight problem.
  4. Check the published height range rather than trusting "one size fits most".
  5. Check the returns window. You cannot judge weight or warmth from a photograph.

One thing we will not do on this page is pretend Enfold competes on weight. It does not. The trials behind weighted blanket claims dose at roughly 7 to 12 percent of body weight, and in the largest of them the placebo arm used a 1.5 kg blanket. Enfold carries four pounds, which is near enough that placebo. So a heavier blanket genuinely delivers something Enfold does not, and we treat our own weight as a sensation you feel immediately rather than a clinical dose. The longer version is here.

Common questions

Can you get a weighted blanket you can walk around in?

Yes, though the wearable versions are garments rather than blankets. The weight is sewn through the hood and shoulders so it stays in position, and the sides are left open so your arms are free. Expect a few pounds rather than fifteen.

How much does a wearable weighted blanket weigh?

Usually 3 to 6 lb, against 10 to 25 lb for a flat one. Your shoulders carry it instead of a mattress, so it has to be lighter. That is a real tradeoff and not a marketing detail.

Does a wearable weighted blanket work as well as a heavy one?

Not for pressure. It works for a different hour. A flat blanket covers the time you are lying still, and a wearable one covers the time before that, which is when most people are cold, upright and trying to wind down.

What should you look for when buying one?

Weight sewn into channels rather than loose fill, open sides so you can use your hands, a breathable outer fabric, a published height range, and a returns window long enough to actually test it.
