The 3am problem: what to wear when you can't sleep

Last updated: 21 August 2026.

The clock says 3am. You are awake, and the argument in your head about why you are awake is making it worse. Here is the small physical thing that helps more than the mental one.

Do not turn everything back on

The instinct at 3am is to reach for the phone: light, noise, information, all the signals that tell a body it is daytime. It is the exact wrong move. Whatever you do in that hour should be quiet, warm, and slightly boring. The goal is not to solve anything. It is to lower the volume until sleep can get a word in.

Warmth is a sleep signal

A gentle rise in skin temperature, paired with a slow drop in core temperature, is one of the body's cues that it is time to sleep. The gap between core and skin temperature is the best physiological predictor we have of how quickly someone falls asleep (Kräuchi et al., Nature, 1999), and a review of 5,322 studies found warming the body before bed shortened time-to-sleep by about ten minutes (Haghayegh et al., Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2019). It is part of why a warm bath before bed works. Wrapping up properly, not a thin throw, pulls the same lever. Warmth at the surface, stillness underneath.

Weight does the rest

Add a little weight to the warmth and you get the second half: the sensation of being held, which most people feel as their shoulders dropping without being told to. This is the whole idea behind Enfold, a floor-length hooded cape with four pounds through the hood and shoulders, made for exactly this hour. You put it on at the window or the edge of the bed, the hood goes up, and there is nothing left to perform.

We are careful about what we claim for those four pounds: it is a sensation you will notice in the first minute, not a clinical dose. Here is why that distinction matters.

A small routine for the wrong hour

  1. Leave the phone face-down and out of reach.
  2. One low lamp, not the overhead light.
  3. Something warm and heavy over your shoulders.
  4. Sit, do not pace. Let the weight settle.
  5. Wait it out. Boredom is on your side.

Off is the new on. If 3am is a regular appointment for you, Enfold was built for it, and the 03:00 Club is where we talk about that hour directly.

Common questions

Why do you wake up at 3am?

Waking in the night is normal and most people do it several times without remembering. What makes 3am memorable is that you stayed awake afterwards. Body temperature sits near its lowest around then, and a cold room makes drifting back off harder.

Should you get out of bed when you cannot sleep?

Standard sleep advice says yes, after roughly twenty minutes, because lying there frustrated teaches your brain that bed is a place for being awake. The catch is that getting up means getting cold, which is the thing keeping you up.

What should you wear when you wake up in the night?

Something you can put on in the dark in one motion, with no buttons to find and no sleeves to fight. The aim is to get warm without turning on lights or waking yourself up any further than you already are.

Does getting warm help you fall back asleep?

Warming the skin, especially at the hands and feet, is associated with falling asleep faster, and that is well documented for the run up to bed. Nobody has tested it specifically for the middle of the night, so treat it as reasonable to try rather than proven.
