Floor-Length Blanket Hoodie: What Actually Reaches Your Feet
Most blanket hoodies stop at the knee because of their sleeves. To reach the floor, look for a sleeveless hooded cape whose shoulder-to-hem length is about 0.82 times your height.

Search for a long blanket hoodie and you will see the words full-length, ankle-length, extra-long and floor-length used for garments that stop anywhere from mid-thigh to the floor. None of them is a measurement. This guide explains why most blanket hoodies stop where they do, how to check a listing in thirty seconds, and which shapes really reach your feet.
Why most blanket hoodies stop at the knee
A blanket hoodie is a sweatshirt scaled up: sleeves, cuffs, often a front pocket, and a body that hangs from the shoulders. The sleeves are the reason it stops at the knee. Make the body much longer and it starts to behave like a long dress with arms: it binds at the knee when you sit cross-legged, you tread on it on the stairs, and the extra weight drags the sleeves down your hands.
So the well-known sleeved ones keep the length moderate. The Oodie Original's larger size publishes a 100 cm (39 inch) front length, measured from the top of the shoulder, which lands between mid-thigh and the knee on most adults. The Comfy sells "Long" versions of its Original and Dream (The Original Long was $59.99 on its site on 26 October 2026) for people who want more, still in the sleeved hoodie shape.
How to check any listing in thirty seconds
- Find the shoulder-to-hem length. Not the length from the top of the hood, which adds 25 cm or so that never reaches the floor. If a listing only says "long" or "extra-long", ask for the number.
- Multiply your height in inches by 0.82. That is roughly how high your shoulder sits.
- Subtract the garment length. What is left is how far above the floor the hem sits when you stand. Zero or less means it reaches the floor.
Example: at 5'8" (68 inches), your shoulder is about 56 inches up. A 39-inch hoodie blanket leaves the hem 17 inches off the floor, around the knee. A 56-inch garment touches the floor.
The shapes that reach the floor
Garments that really reach the ankle almost all drop the sleeves. The usual construction is a hooded cape or hooded poncho blanket: a front and a back joined at the shoulders, open down both sides, pulled on over the head. With nothing anchoring it at the wrists, the fabric can run long and fold around you when you sit. Your arms come out through the open sides, and go back in when you stop using them.
Within that shape there are two ways to handle length:
- Sold by height. Free the Sheep's Eden Hoodie comes in five adult height bands, from 5'2" or shorter up to 6'6" or taller. If you are very tall, that is a real advantage. It is $199.99 on their site. See our Eden size guide.
- One long size. Enfold, ours, is 56 inches (142 cm) from shoulder to hem. It reaches the ankle on someone around six foot, touches the floor around 5'6", and pools on the floor below that. One size means nothing to guess when it is a gift.
The height-by-height table shows exactly where Enfold's hem lands from 5'0" to 6'9".
What floor length changes, good and bad
- Warmer feet and legs. Sitting on a sofa, the fabric folds over your feet and closes the gap a knee-length hoodie leaves. That is most of the reason people want it.
- Stairs need a hand. Gather the front like a long dressing gown. Shorter people will do this anyway.
- Heavier to wash and post. More fabric. Check the return cost before you buy, because a paid international return on a floor-length garment can be a meaningful share of the price. Ours are free.
- Hands are out at the sides, not in sleeves. If your hands are the cold part, a sleeved hoodie with cuffs suits you better.

Common questions
Is there a blanket hoodie that goes to your feet?
Yes, but it is usually sleeveless: a hooded cape that pulls on over the head and is open at the sides. Sleeved blanket hoodies generally stop between mid-thigh and the knee, even in their long versions.
How long should a floor-length wearable blanket be?
Multiply your height in inches by 0.82. A shoulder-to-hem length close to that number reaches the floor. At 6'0" that is about 59 inches; at 5'4", about 52.
What is the difference between ankle-length and floor-length?
Two or three inches. A garment that reaches the ankle on a six-footer touches the floor on someone a few inches shorter, so the same piece is both, depending on who wears it.
Is a floor-length blanket hoodie safe on stairs?
Take the same care as with a long dressing gown: lift the front with one hand on the way down. Shorter people, for whom it pools on the floor, should always do this.
